The zona pellucida

The zona pellucid is a glycoprotein membrane (consisting of 4 different glycoproteins, ZP1, ZP2, ZP3, ZP4) that wraps egg in mammals. In detail, this is a primary envelope, produced by the oocyte during oogenesis and is located between the egg cell plasma membrane and follicular cells.

It has a transparent appearance and often remains at the time of implantation, allowing the sperm to adhere and then penetrate with difficulty, involving about 50,000 ligands.

The role of the pellucida area is very important for fertilization: it contains the sperm receptors and contributes to the blockage of the polyspermia; It also serves to protect the embryo during segmentation; induces the release of the lithic enzymes present in the acrosome and guarantees the species-specificity of the fertilization.

A particular shape (the PZP-Porcine pellucida area) is extracted from the pig’s ovaries.
